I've discovered something in my many long years of life experience.
There's just no good way to say "let's talk about a specific thing that's on my mind" without giving the wrong impression! Whenever you say any variation of that, the other person gets that look on their face like they're afraid you're going to tell them that someone has died.
I think this is exactly why people avoid bringing up serious conversations. There's no way to start them without that one horrifically awkward moment.
